Roadpix - Michigan's Transition To ClearviewA topic of a lot of recent discussion on misc.transport.road and Yahoo! greatlakesroads concerns the advent of the Clearview font, which is now being transitioned to all signage in Michigan, as shown in the "Before" and "After" pictures below.I-69, Shiawassee County, MI, USA, July 13, 2005
Before: Here are two photos of a standard mile marker posted along I-69. Up until recently, the
standard was to render these in FHWA font.
That standard has changed, as the two photos following these will show.
Left: along eastbound I-69 near M-13 (Exit 123) in eastern Shiawassee County, MI. Right: A closer view of the same sign. (Click the images for larger views.) I-96, Livingston County, MI, USA, July 12, 2005
After: Here are two photos of another, newer mile marker, this one along I-96. This one as you can
clearly see is rendered in Clearview. It's hard to tell, but the word "Mile" is in Clearview also.
Left: along eastbound I-96 in western Livingston County, MI Right: A closer view of the same sign. (Click the images for larger views.) The photos below show how Clearview changes the way we look at route markers also. I-96, Livingston County, MI, USA, July 12, 2005
Before: Here are two photos of a standard I-96 reassurance marker, with a cardinal direction banner. For decades, Michigan state highway reassurance markers used signage such as this, rendered in the FHWA font.
Left: along eastbound I-96 in eastern Livingston County, MI. Right: A closer view of the same sign. (Click the images for larger views.) After: Here are two photos of another, newer I-96 marker, this time with the directional banner rendered in Clearview. This was the first such occurence I noticed statewide.
Also notice the larger first letter "E" in the word "East". While this has been a normal practice in many
other states, Michigan is just beginning to adopt this standard. This marker represents the new standard, going forward.
