Roadpix - US-131 "Exit 76"Northbound US-131 at 76th Street, Grand Rapids, MI, USA, February 23, 2003MDOT had been caught in a bit of controversy with it's exit numbering on US-131 near the 76th Street exit, which is actually located 1/4 mile north of milepost 75. 
A few years ago sign crews inadvertenly changed the 76th Street exit number from 75 to 76 - an understandable mistake.
But when someone at MDOT caught and and tried to correct the error, many locals complained, forcing MDOT to
change the signs back. Unfortunately the job was only partially finished, adding further to the confusion.Here is a view of the 76th Street exit from northbound US-131. Here it is marked Exit 76 (with a greenout "76" over the former "75"). But notice the advance sign for 68th Street just beyond the exit gore. It is also marked Exit 76! Confused yet? Southbound US-131 at 68th Street, Grand Rapids, MI, USA, February 23, 2003 This picture was taken along southbound US-131 at 68th Street, Exit 77, which would be Exit 76 except that 76th Street will once again become Exit 76. 
Just beyond the Exit 77 sign is the advance sign for 76th Street, which has a greenout "75" plate covering
up the "76" on the Exit tab. The "75" will be removed in the spring of 2003 so that the 76th Street exit is once again
marked Exit 76.So for those of you keeping score at home: on northbound US-131 we have two Exit 76s, and on southbound US-131 we have an Exit 77 (which is located at milepost 76) and an Exit 75 (which is located at milepost 75 but will be renumbered Exit 76). Now are you confused yet? 
Here is a closer view of the same advance sign for 76th Street (from the previous photo). Here you can see that it clearly shows the greenout "75" plate covering the "76" on the Exit tab. Further south, the blue "services" signs for the 76th Street exit are outfitted with Exit 76 tabs. |
